The origins of Field Gun competitions link back to the Boer War and the drill simulated to bring naval guns into action during the march to Ladysmith in 1899. Every year since 1907, the naval base at HMS Collingwood in Hampshire has played host to the Brickwoods Trophy, showcasing a display of speed, dexterity, teamwork and strength.

Tasha’s team in the recent field gun competition was called the Maritime Reserves. Currently based in a unit at Portsmouth called HMS King Alfred here is her account of the day…

“I was the second female ever to be a firing number and completed the second action firing in the competition. I received the most votes in the team and won ‘Crew member of the year;” having stepped into the position a week before the competition after the crew member originally doing the position, was run over by the one-tonne gun during training, breaking his foot in several places. We came third in the second plate final which was excellent considering the number of injuries the team carried by the time the competition came round!”
