Speech Day & BBQ 2011
Despite the truly terrible weather conditions we had to deal with last year, making the move to in front of the Jonathan Edwards Sports Centre was a great idea
. We were in a more central position to the various matches, making it easier for people to pause for something to eat or drink on their way past. The many compliments and positive comments we received made us determined to put on an even better show this year.
Luckily, this year the weather was on our side. It was dry and warm - we even had some actual sunshine once or twice! We were kept busy all through the afternoon, and into the early evening, feeding and watering players, parents, alumni and pupils.
Once again, Jeff Ryall, whose sole link to the school is having the fortune (or misfortune) of being married to alumna, Kirsti Ryall 83-90 C, did sterling work before, during and after the barbecue. He was ably assisted by Neil Kingdon 66-75 C, Guy Avery 80-89 F and son, Paddy, Andrew Broggio 82-87 F, and Kirsti Ryall.
As last year, we couldn't have done the barbecue without the help of Ian Thomas 08- S, Tom 11- S and all the kitchen staff and porters, who went out of their way to help. And all in the middle of a busy weekend of events including the re-opening of the pool, the Governors' Dinner, Speech Day lunch to name but a few.
Thanks also go to the OWBA and Andrew Broggio (OWBA President) for covering all the costs, allowing us to offer a free barbecue for the second year running, and to David Walker 75-82 B for sourcing the marquee.
