Becoming a Chelsea Pensioner

20 Jun 2017
Alumni News
I attended the Royal Hospital, Chelsea for a four day interview on the 16th January. There were quite a lot of questions and one of the main ones was, “why do you want to become a Chelsea pensioner”

All of the interviews went well and after the four days I departed for Devon to stay with Chris Ponder. Whilst staying with Chris I had my invite to join the RHC on the 30th January, which I took up immediately. On arrival at the RHC I was told that I would be in Two Company, the room was nice and the pensioners on the ward very friendly. I had more interviews, issue of my uniform, and luckily a brand new scarlet coat that you normally have to wait up to fifteen weeks to be made for you.

April was my first outing in scarlet and I have already attended many functions including Handel’s Messiah at Cadogan Hall, and Chelsea V Middlesbrough where I met George Friend before kick-off.

I feel that I am in a very privileged retirement home, the RHC is a wonderful place to live, and all the staff and pensioners are very helpful.
