Shooting report. WBS v OWBA. Sept. 2019.
The Derek Holt memorial Cup.

Members of the Veterans Rifle Club gathered once again at the Crowl - Langley rifle-range for some much needed practice. Our June competition with the School was cancelled so this was our only chance to practice with our new jackets and gloves this year. New equipment isn't going to turn any of us into top marksmen, but every little bit of fine tuning should help to improve our scores slightly. Two new faces joined us this time. Nick Guy, who lives in North Devon, hasn't fired a match weapon since leaving school. Alistair Assheton, who lives in northern France, cycled over to join us at Bisley this year and now made it back to School (using mechanised transport ! ) to shoot and attend our AGM .

Meanwhile, at Two o'clock, we went down to the Albert Beer range to shoot against the new school shooting team. Amy Brown, who is captain of shooting again for the third year in succession, pulled together a very young and inexperienced team for the school. I did the opposite. You might think the result would be a foregone conclusion. Or would young eyes and nimble fingers be our downfall?

Purdy and Clemmie Oliver shot first for WB, against Richard Heywood and Simon Holt. The girls, with a combined age of about twenty three, scored 176. The 'boys', with nearer one hundred and twenty three years of experience, scored 165. Not much to concern us there. Emily Stapleton and Emily Brunton went next and scored exactly the same, 176, whilst Mike Baggs and Lewis Pring together added 267 for the OWBA. We were now cruising with a hundred point lead. Harry Ayres and Isla Howells brought some necessary experience to the third detail and added 246 to the School score sheet but Alistair Assheton and Martin Miller put 293 on ours. OWBA were now 150 in front, with one detail to go! Amy, having saved her best 'til last, and Nicole Tse racked up a very impressive 319 whilst 'Nick' and 'Terry' (no names, no pack drill !) between them put a not very impressive 168 onto our score sheet. Final result, Amy and her young and inexperienced squad narrowly pipped us at the post, by a mere..........54 points. Amy also won the Ludlow Gillies challenge cup for the highest score on the WB team.

Many congratulations to the WBS team for their third consecutive win.
