West Buckland Veterans’ Rifle Club - Bisley 2023 (by Dave Pote)

On Thursday 13th July West Buckland's finest marksmen (really? – Ed) assembled at Bisley for our annual club championships and to compete in the Schools Veterans match.  There were a few new faces (great to see you all) along with some of the usual stalwarts.  First up was the Sanders memorial cup shot at 300 yards.  This is a tricky distance as although it’s the shortest range for fullbore shooting the target is small so even little mistakes are reflected in the score.  Out of a maximum score of 50.10 (the V bull, a smaller ring inside the bull is worth 5.1)

Jono Williams                47.3   Duncan Gray                 38.0
Dave Pote                     46.6    Adrian Jarrad                35.0
Andy Robertson            44.4   Mark Beckett                 33.0
Pete Login                    43.4      Andy Bell                       33.0
Chris Wilson                 39.2    Wakefield Carter            29.0
  Mat Coombs                  24.0

Jono’s initial score was distinctly average (just like your school reports – Ed) however, after convincing us the rifle was at fault and not him he had another go and put in the highest score of the day, so despite having only been a member of the OWBA for a week he deservedly took the trophy home.

This year we entered two teams in the schools vets match which is shot at 500yds.  The standard is extremely high with several schools able to field two teams comprised entirely of current or ex GB team members.  In a team match the shooter is only responsible for firing an accurate shot when asked to.  Sitting next to them is a wind coach who adjusts the sights to compensate for the wind (which can push each shot wide by several feet if not accounted for) and tells the shooter when to shoot between gusts.  Despite zero experience and only thirty seconds of instruction Duncan Gray stepped up to be the WBSVRC (B) team wind coach and the results show he has a talent for it. Don’t expect to be let off next year! Again out of a maximum of 50.10 the results were

WBSVRC (A)    WBSVRC (B)
Dave Pote                     49.5 Mark Beckett                42.2
Andy Robertson            45.2  Andy Bell                      42.2
Chris Wilson                 43.4  Duncan Gray                41.0
Pete Login                    42.1  Wakefield Carter           38.0
Jono Williams               39.0      Adrian Jarrad                36.1
Total                             218.12  Total                              199.4

This placed the A team 42nd out of 47 teams (ahead of Blundells…. – Ed) and the B team 22nd out of 27. Trophies were awarded to

Saunders Memorial (300yds) - Jono Williams

Squires Cup (500yds) - Dave Pote

Best 1st Sighter - Andy Robertson

Best V bull - Chris Wilson

Thanks to everyone who took part.  The next shoot is planned to be on the 9th September at the school, approximately 10:30 for a fullbore practice and then 14:00 for the match against the school.  Anyone who has been in the WBS CCF or school shooting team is welcome to join the club and shoot with us.  If you’re planning to attend please let me know.
