It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of former Headmaster Michael Downward, who led West Buckland School from 1979 to 1997. Michael passed away just a month short of his 84th birthday.
Michael was a ground-breaking headmaster whose brilliant mind and forward-thinking leadership left an enduring legacy. Under his stewardship, the school grew in strength, character, and academic standing, and his influence has continued to be felt long after his retirement.
Following his headship, Michael remained deeply committed to the school community, serving as a Trustee of West Buckland School Foundation for ten years until 2021 thus continuing to support the development of the school he loved so dearly.
Details of Michael’s funeral will be shared as soon as they are confirmed.
The lunch that had been planned to celebrate Michael’s birthday at West Buckland School will still go ahead on Sunday 8th June. This will now become an occasion to celebrate Michael’s life and his extraordinary contribution to the school. To attend this event please visit the event page at Michael Downward Celebration Lunch | Events | Old West Buckland Association
Please email your condolences to [email protected] and we shall ensure these are printed and delivered to Mrs Downward on your behalf.
We know many of you will have fond memories of Michael and may wish to join us in honouring his life and legacy.
