OWBA vs WBS Tennis Match Report

On a notably dry, sunny evening - something that has proved to be a rarity this season - it was a pleasure to welcome back OWBA members for a friendly yet competitive fixture against the school team. The OWBA consisted of ten players, including:

Sophie Brummitt (nee Cornish) (94-01C)

Naomi Wild (nee Loosemore) (89-01F)

James Wickett (87-94F)

Victoria O'Connor (nee Lawson) (94-99C)

Grant Lawson (82-93C)

Georgie Cooke (nee Loosemore) (97-99F)

Chris Hooper (92-02C)

Tony Hooper (former staff)

Victoria Brunton (Parent)

This also included a guest appearance from Mrs Wickett, a key member of the school's tennis coaching team and parent.

Despite the school's dominant position with one round to go, the OWBA staged an impressive comeback, winning all their final matches and securing a 9-6 victory. The tennis was played in a good spirit, followed by an equally enjoyable barbecue at the pavilion, whilst watching the conclusion of the OWBA cricket.

Thank you to all involved, especially to those returning to the school. We look forward to another enjoyable encounter next year.

OWBA vs WBS Shooting Match Report

The WBSVRC gathered at the outdoor shooting range ready to take on the school team, this year we shot two disciplines. Recently we’ve only been able to compete using either smallbore or air rifle as shooting has taken a bit of a hiatus at the school, however with school shooting restarting under the tutelage of the new CCF contingent commander Liz Cwilewicz, we took the opportunity to introduce some staff and pupils to fullbore shooting as well. With the very generous donation from the OWBA Foundation we have been able to purchase new rifles and jackets and this was the first opportunity to try them out. Fullbore shooting uses large calibre rifles (7.62mm) normally at distances between 300 and 1000 yards so using them at 25 yards is a little like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut as Luke C discovered as he slid further back off the rear of the firing point with each shot. Under the guidance of the OWBA marksmen the school team made up of staff and pupils (and one OWBA member picked at random) performed very well. Scores were as follows

OWBA                                               WBS

Andy Bell               40                       Luke C                   25

Chris Wilson          40                       Monty P                 15

Rob Deville            30                       Wilson B                30

Harry Ayres           30                        Liz Cwilewicz         35

Andy Robertson    40                        Mark Beckett*        35

Totals                    180                                                  140

Following on from this we moved on to the quieter and more genteel smallbore match using .22 rifles. Unlike fullbore where the objective was as tight a group as possible, smallbore was about scoring points by hitting the middle of the target. Scores were as follows

Harry Ayres             47                       Amy B                  56

Rob Deville              40                      Monty P               55

Chris Wilson            66                       Wilson B              31

Andy Robertson      39                       Nick J                  56

Andy Bell                 57                       Daisy B               53

                                                           (Liz Cwilewicz     47)

Totals                      249                                                251

With one win each the overall match was declared a draw. Well done to everyone who took part, the next match at the school is on the 7th Sept.
