1930's Reunion
1930's reunion
My father was at West Buckland in the 1930’s. He passed away 11 years ago at the age of 84.
When I was told there was a 1930’s reunion planned for September 2014 I thought it was pretty optimistic to think there might
be any Old Boys who were fit enough to return for a reunion. Remarkably 3 returned and I was privileged to meet Albert Cook (36 -40 B), Richard Harries (33 -34 B) and Ron Way (36 -38 B). Richard Harries, the eldest, was 95 years old.
The return was quite emotional for them, particularly for Richard Harries and Ron Way. Richard Harries is theson of Headmaster Harries (1907-34) who gave his name to the sports field that people of my era remember at the back of the school behind the ‘bogs’ and the cycle
shed. We had lunch in The Downward Room which was the Headmasters’ kitchen.
Ron, Richard and Albert were given a tour of the School by Mike Tucker (75 - S). They were not too interested in Mike telling them what went on in the various rooms in 2014. They just wanted to stand, look around and let the memories of their School days 80 years previously come flooding back. A moving experience for them.
