Careers
Life after WBS: Inspired from an early age by the construction industry and in love with art, I always aspired to follow a career in architecture. However, this goal was put into question during my
A- levels at West Buckland as I had such a fantastic time working and learning as an artist, hugely inspired by my peers and of course my teachers Nigel Minard and Nikki De Marco, that I thought perhaps I should explore a career in Art. Unable to choose between the two, I embarked on an art foundation course at Falmouth University where I learnt a wide range of art skills. During this year, I naturally gravitated toward architectural design and this led to a nine-year career as an architectural student. This year I will complete my final year of study to become a qualified architect.

Why I choose to help the career’s programme: Growing up I was always given great support that helped me to realise my future aspirations. Teachers and friends helped me to develop my goals and realise my passions in life. I returned to WBS to hopefully inspire a new generation to consider their own dreams. For me, small exposures to a wide range of career paths help me decide what I was interested in, so it was important for me to pass on and share my experience with the current  pupils. I think it is great that the school are seeking out ex-pupils to talk with the current pupils about their careers.

Returning to WBS: Of course, it was a very nostalgic visit.  I have incredibly warm memories of my time at WBS and it was lovely to see some old faces. It was wonderful to see the growth the school has undergone in 10 years and the fantastic facilities that are available to the current students – they are incredibly lucky! I was still playing hockey on grass (mud) up on the fields until Year 11 when the astro pitch was introduced. Now there is a new art studio, library, sports hall, boarding house and more. I wonder what the school will bring in the next 10 years!
