A rotating pair of rectangular rooms has been named the winning design for a temporary artist's studio proposed for four locations across England.

A national competition to design the observatory was launched by the Winchester-based Space Placemaking and Urban Design (SPUD) organisation in March. The structure, chosen from more than 50 entries, was developed by four architecture graduates and a Devon-based artist. Charlotte Knight (99-06 G) and Edward Crumpton (93-05 C) were talented artists during their time at school, under the tutelage of Nigel Minard (88-12 S), who was instrumental in reuniting the pair for this project.

Charlotte graduated from Oxford Brookes University with a first class honours degree in Architecture and now works as an Architectural Assistant at Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios in London.

On completion of his A levels, Edward studied fine art at the University of Lincoln. The three years taught him how to contextualise his work in relation to other artists whose interests lay in landscape and taking journeys. Edward graduated with a first class honours degree in Fine Art.

The four locations for the studio and workshop are The Winchester Science Centre on the South Downs, Lymington Salt Marshes in the New Forest National Park, the South Dorset Ridgeway and the River Tamar in Devon and Cornwall. The two rooms incorporate a workshop to be used by the public, local schools, colleges, universities and community workshops and a study area for the artist. The design allows the rooms to pivot to give an alternative field of vision.
