WBS v OWBA

Shooting match, September 2017.

Following a rather soggy practice shoot on the Crowl Langley range the VRC joined forces with the OWBA to shoot against the school team in the Albert Beer range. It was reassuringly dry indoors, especially as the noise of heavy rain on the roof almost drowned out conversation occasionally.

Amy Brown - returning as Captain of Shooting for a second year - and Jono Williams went down in the first detail and made a good start with a combined score of 154/250, but Mat and Hendric Coombs did even better for the OWBA and pushed us in front with 165. In the second detail James Mathews and Paddy Bright struggled a bit with their grouping and speed sections, but added 103 to the school scoreboard. Mike Baggs must have adjusted his sights in the wrong direction and was well off-centre but Jono Woollacott shot the only 10mm group of the competition and managed to keep the OWBA slightly in the lead. In the third detail Aiden Beckley and Harvey Brewer rallied and scored 128, despite both dropping shots on their grouping targets, but Lewis and Ruan Pring combined to score 130, extending the OWBA lead by a further two points.

One of the school VIII failed to make it to the range, so in the last detail Sophie Hyde went down against Martin Miller knowing she had some catching up to do. Sophie dropped a shot on her grouping target but then did so well on her application and speed targets that she romped home with the second best score for the school team of 90/125, against Martin Millers 75. At that point, pending some more intense mental arithmetic, we retired to the JESC for team tea and prize giving.

Ultimately, the OWBA were comfortable winners with a final team score of 540/875. WBS came in 'second' with 475. Amy Brown won the Ludlow-Gillies trophy for the highest personal score on the school team of 93/125. Jono Woollacott gets a mention in dispatches for the highest score of the competition with 111/125.

Many thanks to Major Dave Price for organising the shooting match and to everyone who made the effort to turn out and shoot.

Better luck next time, Chris Wilson.
