Mr Colin Blackwell (38-45 B)
Colin Blackwell entered West Buckland School a year before the outbreak of World War Two in September 1938. A prefect and member of Brereton House, his achievements at West Buckland were numerous. By the time he left he was a Sergeant in the Junior Training Corps, the forerunner to the CCF.
He gained the School Certificate in 1942 and the Higher School Certificate in 1944 and 1945. Colin was awarded prizes for his general work in 1941, 1942 and 1943 in addition to the Comer Clarke Prize for English and the Ackland Prize for both Science and Mathematics.
He won his colours for the Football 2nd XV in 1945 and the Cricket 2nd XI in the same year. He was awarded running colours in 1944 and was captain of the team. In 1945 he won the Cross Country Running Cup. Colin also won the Senior Exmoor in both 1944 and 1945 when he set a school record.
On Saturday former Head, Michael Downward (79-97S) celebrated his 80th birthday. Many of his old pupils sent him cards from all over the globe.
