Celebrating Outdoor Learning

On Thursday 3rd December, West Buckland celebrated its longstanding association with outdoor learning and education with the opening of the new Outdoor Hub.

The Outdoor Hub is a dedicated classroom providing resources and support to both pupils and staff wishing to undertake adventurous activities.

As part of the event we were delighted to be joined by two former pupils.  Mike Woodrow 66-73 F was the first West Buckland recipient of the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award in 1973.  Neil Kingdon 66-75 C was one of the members of the school’s first Ten Tors Team, also in 1973.  Mike and Neil were able to share their experiences with current pupils and in a special ceremony, Mike presented pupils with their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh badges and congratulated Jack Helicon in Year 13 on gaining his Gold award.  Jack will be presented with this award at Buckingham Palace later this year.

We were also pleased former staff member David Clark 69-03 S was able to join us.  David played a pivotal role in the early days in developing the Outdoor Learning provision at West Buckland and is still as keen as ever, often seen appearing from behind rocks on Exmoor in his role as a Duke of Edinburgh Award assessor.

The event also provided the opportunity for the launch of West Buckland’s new Adventure Society which will organise a series of events and activities throughout the year, providing students with fantastic opportunities for outdoor learning and adventure using the countryside, coast, rivers and moorland on our doorstep.
