OWBA Golf 2011
If ever there was an occasion graced good weather for a mixed bag gathering of OWBA's and Friends, the day did not disappoint.
The added bonus was the condition of the course, cut and rolled the day before, holding its Spring colours in various shades of green. Blossoming chestnut trees gave that unique flavour of Spring freshness in glorious sunshine - those not on a golf course in good nick missed a treat.
Nine Golfers came on the day and with known names who have been before, we could have been 18 - six 'three ball' teams! May be April and school holidays create understandable demands with families but what is a good date? For the next outing, late September is in the mind. As it was, the organizer's own problems started with a flat tyre in the drive and time was pressing! Using the WB 'attack' initiative platform as we were taught to resolve a problem, a neighbour with wheels was dragooned to transfer kit and an OB delegated to collect prizes from Waitrose! Spare the incomprehensible details but safe to say all helped to put matters right; thank you, for the expected smooth midday 'take - off' time at the first tee.
Scores varied with the majority in the mid thirties (stapleford); excellent results for a jolly and every encouragement given to David Payne, an OB newcomer who came to taste the water with, hopefully, more names in prospect for introducing a younger vintage. Sponsored by two OB's, everyone came away with a prize to be enjoyed at home together with a school Tuck Shop reminder of a Mars Bar stimulant for the journey - and a sun tan to go with it.
In name order left to right in the picture, Ian Williamson, John Ferguson WB, Garry Jensen WB, David Payne WB, Bob van Dissel WB, David Cummins WB, Jeremy Eames WB, Roger Holt, Bill Goodman.
Mention was made before of a WB weekend 16/17/18 September to include playing golf at the Royal North Devon Golf Club, Westward Ho, Speech Day at the School and Dinner with the Headmaster at the Park Hotel in Barnstaple on the Sat, eve. Depending on numbers of our era known to be in the vicinity, Geoff Bayles has an idea to host a BBQ on the Friday 16/9 at his house in Westward Ho. I shall be glad to discuss more for those who are planning to be in the area; tell me as soon as you can.
The next arrangement to gather for OWBA Golf in the South East will be advised later. In the meantime, by all means be in touch to enquire Bob Van Dissel
