OWBA GOLF TOURNAMENT AT THE HOME OF ENGLISH GOLF 12 SEPTEMBER 2014

On a wonderfully benign September day, twelve golfers played in what is hoped will become a regular event in the OWBA calendar.  Two past presidents of Royal North Devon and past captains of Bude and Lyme Regis Golf Clubs met at the 150th running of the Exmoor in March this year, when the conversation got round to golf.

The result was the meeting organised by Rod Boyce (52-60 G) and Dave Pennington (52-58 F).  The Stableford best two of three competition was won with a magnificent score of 89 points, the highlight of which was  Chris Burrows (96- S) going out in 34 gross off a handicap of 11.  Upper Sixth Former Finn Begley (13-15 C) got round in 74, just 2 over par. The first Open Championship, at Prestwick, attracted eight golfers, and hasn’t done too badly since!

Our attendance beat that, so we are hopeful that next year’s event will feature a larger field.  As it was, players came from Buckinghamshire, Oxford, Dorset, Cornwall and Devon.  All were very complimentary of the wonderful traditional links that is RND.

The world renowned Club House and excellent catering are further reasons for making the trip to North Devon in 2015 which, of course, is where we spent our formative years.
