The Association is saddened to share the news of the passing of Judy Anna Orchard-Lisle, widow of Mervyn George Orchard-Lisle (23–29G), who died peacefully in France on 6th August 2025, aged 92.
Born in Cork in 1933, Judy Anna’s early life was shaped by the events of the Second World War, which left a lasting impression on her and her family. Her lifelong passion for horses - whether riding, hunting, showing, or investing - was matched by her love for children, whom she delighted in spoiling wherever in the world she found herself.
Judy Anna was a gifted storyteller, captivating listeners with tales of her life in Africa, always drawing people in and making them feel part of her adventures. After finishing school, Judy Anna moved to London to study. After some time in London, Judy Anna moved to South Africa and became good friends with Mervyn and his wife Phyl who used to holiday in Cape Town. They shared a love of horse racing and laughter. Phyl died in her early sixties and some years later, Judy Anna and Mervyn married, and they spent almost 30 years together in their country home in the South of France. Friends and family visited regularly with many joyful gatherings and fond memories.
An accomplished artist, Judy Anna was especially known for her delicate watercolour paintings. She and Mervyn shared a love of travel, horse racing, and frequent trips to Devon, where they would fondly revisit Mervyn’s old school at West Buckland. Mervyn was one of the school’s most distinguished alumni and a generous supporter of the school, with several buildings and facilities still bearing the Orchard-Lisle family name.
Mervyn’s legacy continues through his son, Paul Orchard-Lisle, a former Chair of Governors and former Patron of West Buckland School, whose contributions have further strengthened the family’s enduring connection to our community.
Judy Anna is remembered with deep affection and gratitude for the joy, creativity, and warmth she brought to those around her. Her life was rich in love, adventure, and generosity - a true inspiration to all who knew her.
