That Ball

At first, rugby seemed an alien sport to me having been raised on football and tennis.

I wallowed in the mud, put my all into scrums, lingered on the wings, and dilly-dallied at back. So any latent talent that I might have had was a long time coming forth; a propensity for fives, tennis and athletics prevailed.

So, some 45 or more were chosen to play in the 1st XV, 2nd XV and colts, leaving some 200 to remain as supporters. Lack of cheering was greeted by Leslie making an appearance at halftime.

It was not till later years, the chance to move one notch up from the 'hardly possibles' to a 'probable' when, I received a pass, and somehow, avoiding all opposition players took the ball over the try-line to score. This happened a few times, and confidence grew.  I knew that, with speed and agility maybe this was something I could manage after all. With better support, some coaching, training and a little push I was there within a "team".
