OWBA v WBS Phoenix Society Debate

The annual Phoenix Debate between the OWBA and the Sixth Form was held on Friday, 16 November.

Former president of the Society, Harry Palmer, returned and teamed up with Reverend Sutcliffe to take on Molly Muir and William Wardle.

The house overwhelmingly voted against the motion

“It should be an offence to offend someone.”

However, when it came to the speeches themselves, Miss Muir and Mr Wardle, who argued that it should be an offence to offend, won in a landslide victory of 55 to 5 votes.

Many thanks for both sides on an exciting and thoughtful debate.

Celebration of Farming : Friday 7th September

Dear Member of the West Buckland School Community

A Celebration of Farming – Friday 7th September 2018

We are delighted to invite you to an evening here at West Buckland School to celebrate the links that the school has with the local farming community and the contribution you all make to the life of the School.  We do hope that you will be keen to gather your farming friends and family members to join us for what we are sure will be a lively and sociable evening.

We are thrilled to confirm that Dr Sean Beer will be our guest speaker.  Sean is currently Senior Lecturer in Agriculture at Bournemouth University, a Nuffield Scholar and advocate for British food, farming and the countryside.  He attended West Buckland School in the early 1980’s. His late father, Albert Beer, was also educated at WBS. Albert went on to a distinguished career internationally and locally, working passionately on campaigns related to food, farming and the countryside.

The evening will commence with a drinks reception at 7.00pm in the 150 Building, with a three-course meal served in the Karslake Hall at 7.45pm followed by short speeches.  A cash bar will be available throughout the evening.

Tickets are £20 per person and £10 for current sixth formers and undergraduates.  Please book your tickets by Friday 24th August – places are limited so please do book as soon as possible with the Foundation Office.  Please return the reply slip in the enclosed pre-paid envelope or email [email protected] to confirm your place.

Yours faithfully
